iPhone Game Review: Low Grav Racer

Low Grav Racer is an intense, fast paced, 3D, anti-gravity, racing game based in the far future. Those of you familiar with the classic Wipeout franchise that originally came to the PlayStation will instantly see similarities as Cobra Mobile attempt to bring the intense high speed racing experience to the iPhone.

With two modes of play, Single Play and Competition play, the game features impressive 3D graphics and impressively smooth gameplay that will give you an all round great experience when playing this game. You control your ship by tilting your device to steer, which works well and gives the game a good feel and decent control over your ship. A button is also available to you to apply brakes when racing.

In competition play you are required to finish each race in the top 3 to unlock the next track, with a total of 12 planet based tracks available to unlock. These tracks then become unlocked for Single Play. My only gripe with this is that when I saw “Competition Play” in the menu I assumed it would put me in a mini-league or cup to compete for points across a couple of rounds. Unfortunately this isn’t quite the case with it just being one race at a time and just to unlock the next track. Perhaps this could be a new feature introduced in future updates of the game as it would certainly give it that little bit extra to keep you coming back for more.

Despite this, gameplay is fun and competitive. This is added to with a number of weapons available to your disposal, which make gameplay a little more chaotic and intense. Weapons such as missiles and mines are triggered by simply tapping an on screen button. When you lead the pack at the front during a race you can’t help but worry about your rivals behind you picking up missiles to send your way. I found it especially frustrating having lead the pack for the majority of the race only to be picked off within spitting distance of the finish line and ending up finishing last. It would be nice to perhaps see a little more variety in the weapons that are available to you, but they are fun none the less.

As far as difficulty goes the game is pretty easy to pick up but can be a challenge and some tracks will take more mastering to finish in the top 3 then others. The action can become incredibly fast paced if you are lucky enough to hit all the boosts that are available if you run over them during the race.

All in all though I found Low Grav Racer to be a thrilling game to play and with news of new tracks and features coming to future updates it looks as though the game is only going to get better. It would perhaps be nice to see some form of cup/league mode as well as some form of online play. Either way, I highly recommend this game to any racing fan out there and I’m looking forward to seeing how this game progresses in future releases.
